DECK

The outside helm position on the 44 gives a commanding view, and is ideal for close quarter manouvering, coming alongside and anchoring.

All lines are led to the aft deck, so sails can be handled easily and efficiently from the helm.  In mast reefing on the main with roller reefing on the both headsails makes light work of setting and handing sails.

Autohelm and depthsouders are duplicated, as are the VHF radio and anchor controls. The helmsman has his own drop down seat, and side seats (that double as lockers) means there is a safe seat for crew and passengers.

BELAY PINS - An old fashioned solution for a modern problem. Note side seats/ rope lockers, Fender store and “windows” in the dodgers. The Helmsman’s seat folds neatly away

The summer in the Med’ can get very hot, and Unda” is equipped with an awning that covers the whole aft deck. The Mizzen has been raised and modified to allow full headroom.  There is enough room to put on extra deck chairs so crew and visitors can enjoy the shade around the folding cockpit table.

“Unda” berthed Med’ style stern-to in a small Greek harbour

Stainless steel Handrail Breaking with tradition we decided to replace the “Nauticat trademark” solid teak handrail with stainless steel.  I didn’t want to spend my retirement continuosly varnishing. It took us a long time to track down this superb profile, but it does look quite stunning.  So good that Siltala Yachts now offer it as option on new builds. Annual maintainance is now a quick polish with Autosol!.

Photo left also shows the deck mounted anchor winch, and the Liferaft, nicely mounted out of the way, but easily accesible.Teak Decking throughout is the ideal “non-slip” surface.

The Bowsprit/Anchor Platform is ideal for a clear view when picking up mooring bouys or anchoring. We also have a stainless steel boarding ladder which clips on the front of the bowsprit whch gives good acces if we want to berth “bows too” rather than going in astern.
This makes the manuvere much easier, and provides a great deal more privacy in a busy harbour.

It also makes a useful “perch” for Helen, her favourite place on a calm day, when it is usually shared by a couple dolphins playing in the bow wave!

Meanwhile our bold captain Michael keeps an eye on things from the helm.

Stak-Pak type system with lazyjacks on the Mizzen makes for a quick and easy stow,

We always have a “preventer” permanently rigged on the main boom
